1. Look at Both Car Batteries

On both your and your helper’s car, you should identify the positive and negative terminals. The positive terminal is marked by a plus sign, while the negative terminal is identified by a minus sign.

2. Connect the Cables

Take your red clamp and connect one end to the positive terminal of the dead battery. The other end goes on the positive terminal of the working battery. Take your black clamp and connect it to the negative terminal of the working battery. Connect the other end to a clean metal surface under the hood of your dead vehicle.

While you complete this step, do not cross the positive and negative jumper cable clamps and make sure your cables are not twisted before you proceed.

3. Start the Working Engine

Have your helper start their working car and let it run for a few minutes. Try to start your dead car. If it works, let your helper’s car run for a few minutes before disconnecting the cables. Make sure to remove the negative cable first, followed by the positive.

If your vehicle doesn’t start, you can wait three minutes and try a second time. If you’re still having issues, you can try for a third and final time after another 10 minutes. After that, if your car still won’t start, your battery will need further assistance and trying to jump the car again could cause damage.
