2021 VW Atlas: NHTSA Safety Rating

As tested by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), the 2021 VW Atlas earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating.

When tested for safety in the event of a Frontal Crash, the VW Atlas earned a 4-Star Safety Rating. This score is found by combining the score from the driver and passenger side of the vehicle in a head-on collision moving at 35 MPH.

Additionally, the VW Atlas earned a 5-Star Safety Rating in Side Crash testing. For this, the NHTSA tested the front and rear safety in the event of a side barrier and side pole collision.

Finally, the vehicle earned a 4-Star Safety Rating in Rollover Resistance testing, which ranks how well it can withstand a potential rollover in a single-vehicle, loss-of-control situation.

Volkswagen Atlas: Standard Safety Systems

While much of the vehicle’s safety is rated based on construction and passive features like air bags, the VW Atlas also has a number of built-in standard safety technologies to help prevent and mitigate damage in the event of a collision.

You’ll find that the 2021 VW Atlas is equipped with six stability-enhancing systems, such as:

• Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution: This system is built to maintain optimal stopping power during a hard-brake situation.
• Electronic Stability Control: This can adjust engine throttle and apply corrective force to the wheels.

Additionally, there are a few systems designed to protect you during and after a collision. The Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) can turn off the fuel pump, unlock the doors, and activate the hazard lights after a collision that deploys the airbags. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System will work to slow the vehicle after a crash to help mitigate any further damage.
